Watching Hulu Japan from Abroad

Hulu Japan is operated by Nippon TV — completely separate from US Hulu (Disney). Overseas access needs both a Japanese VPN and Japanese payment.

Hulu Japan is not the same company as US Hulu

Hulu Japan is operated by Nippon TV — completely separate from US Hulu (Disney). At ¥1,026/month (incl. tax), it focuses on J-drama, foreign series Netflix doesn't carry, and BBC content. The catalogues do not flow between regions.

So a US Hulu account doesn't work here, and neither does any Taiwanese / Chinese Hulu account. You need a Japanese Hulu account plus a Japanese VPN.

Overseas blocking and account constraints

  • Hulu Japan has strict IP detection — overseas IPs are refused
  • Account creation and payment-method changes only work from inside Japan
  • App and browser apply the same logic
  • Offline downloads are restricted to Japan

VPN requirements and recommendations

NordVPN and ExpressVPN test reliably. NordVPN is our overall #1, with the most Japan servers. For heavy traffic, switch to a non-Tokyo node.

Signup and payment

  • Japanese phone number required (SMS verification)
  • Payment: Japan-issued cards, PayPay, d-Barai, Rakuten Pay, etc.
  • 14-day free trial
  • Best to register while physically in Japan
