Watching TVer from Abroad

TVer is a free catch-up service jointly run by Japan's commercial TV networks. Completely free, but hard-blocked overseas.

What TVer is and why it's hard-blocked overseas

TVer is the joint catch-up service run by Japan's commercial TV networks (NTV, TBS, Fuji, TV Asahi, TV Tokyo, etc.). Most of their catch-up content lives here. It's fully free and most content needs no signup.

But overseas IPs are hard-blocked. The reason: Japan-only domestic licensing — the music, scripts, and source rights the networks license are restricted to Japan, so the technical layer simply refuses non-Japanese IPs.

How the block works

  • IP is checked the moment you load the page; overseas IPs see a region-restricted notice
  • iOS / Android apps detect the same way
  • VPN IPs can also be flagged — pick a VPN with a TVer track record
  • Mid-session VPN switching often fails — restart in a new tab or private window

Recommended VPNs

Most major VPNs work. NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark all unblock TVer reliably. NordVPN is our overall #1. TVer is sensitive to mid-session IP changes — refresh the page after connecting.

What's in the catalogue

  • Catch-up from each commercial network (typically 1-week window)
  • Some live simulcasts
  • Some archived content
  • NHK content is not on TVer (separate platform)
